Dungeon Fighter Online, if you take the name at face value, is exactly what it sounds like: you fight things in a dungeon online with other people. To be a little bit less reductive, Dungeon Fighter Online is an online beat ‘em up with strong emphasis on RPG elements.

Like any RPG you start the game by creating a character. The character creation process in Dungeon Fighter Online is very straightforward with little customization, as you simply pick your class and name your character. For your class you can pick from five different types (six if you count the gender choice for Gunners) that have different strengths and weaknesses. The Slayer, with his good speed, offense, and defense, is the all-around class using melee weapons. The Fighter is a hand to hand female brawler with powerful offense, good defense and quick speed. The Gunner uses guns and quickness to evade and eliminate attackers; it’s also the only class available in both genders. The Mage offsets her physical weakness with magical powers. Finally, the Priest sacrifices his speed and range to deliver strong melee attacks and bolster defense.

After picking a class and naming your character, you are shown a short comic book style introduction before being thrown into the tutorial mission that introduces the controls and basic gameplay. The gameplay is simple, you use the arrow keys to move your character and the Z, X, and C keys to attack, use a special attack, and jump, respectively. Special attack skills can also be bound to the A, S, D, F, G, and H keys as well. Using a combination of these skills and attacks, you fight through dungeons, gathering gold, items, and experience along the way. As you gather experience, you’ll progress through levels earning skill points with which to purchase newer and more powerful skills.

The gold you gather can be used to purchase items from shops and other players, but some of the best items can only be purchased with NX, a currency created by Nexon for use in their games, which can only be acquired using real world money. Some of these NX only items include healing items and Avatar Tokens, which allow you to get avatar items that change your character’s appearance and can confer bonuses. You won’t ever need to purchase NX to play Dungeon Fighter Online, but don’t be surprised if you fall behind the curve of those who do.

Moving around town in Dungeon Fighter Online can be somewhat of a chore as the community sector of the game is sprawled out across multiple screens and your character is limited to a slower pace without access to the dash function found in the dungeons. Thankfully, much of the out of dungeon experience can be accessed through menus without needing to find a specific character.

Dungeon Fighter Online is definitely fun to play, at least for a little while, but the real measure of staying power for a multiplayer game like this is the community. Since Dungeon Fighter Online is free to play, the servers are almost always teaming with players, but since it is free some of these players are jerks. Still since it is free, it shouldn’t be difficult to rope some friends into playing the game at least once and seeing if it’s worth your while. If you like MMOs or side-scrolling beat ‘em ups, you should probably go give Dungeon Fighter Online a try, even if you can’t find someone else to play with you.
