The back cover of the Challenge Me: Brain Puzzles game by O-Games claims that playing Challenge Me games regularly may help to reduce anxiety, improve logical thinking, increase brain reactions and improve creativity. Not mentioned, but also a possibility the first time picking up this game, is the potential of pulling one’s hair out or throwing the Nintendo DS – including this game – across the room!
The game includes 1,000’s of Sudoku and Picture Logic puzzles that can be played in time challenge or free play mode. Players brave enough to play the ‘Challenge Me’ mode can monitor their improvements with stats and graphs with the goal of continuously improving their completion times.
Each puzzle displays a target time as well as an elapsed time feature. So when the target time is 10 minutes and the player has taken well over 20 minutes to complete the puzzle, frustration ensues! The good news is that, with practice, the game can actually be a good companion while traveling, waiting in the doctor’s office or during quiet time at home.
With only two types of puzzles offered in the game, there isn’t a lot to learn initially. In fact, Sudoku has become a particularly popular game during the past few years so many may be familiar with how it is played already. If not, there are short instructions that make getting started an easy task. Players simply tap on a square using their stylus to enter the number they want.
Picture Logic is the other puzzle type offered, and it requires that players match up numbers along the top of the grid to numbers down the side of the grid. For some reason, this reviewer had a complete mental block in learning this one, and a short video showing a sample game would have been very helpful! However, once practiced, these puzzles are fun.
Turning the DS sideways to play this game took a bit of getting used to. In addition, there are no fancy graphics, sounds or downloads with this very basic game. But, overall, Challenge Me: Brain Puzzles provides a positive game playing experience.
