While some game players might not jump at the chance to work on math problems with their Nintendo DS, there is no denying that there is a market for puzzle games such as Challenge Me: Math Workout from O-Games. The games’ PR folks also promise that the game will improve your brain and reduce stress. Wouldn’t it be awesome if it could do laundry and clean your room, too? Alas, maybe those features are in the next version.
Although I was expecting to see a variety of math games offered, those included in Challenge Me: Math Workout are Hidden Logic and Formulate. In Hidden Logic, you guess the values of your cards and opponents’ cards. The object of Formulate is to complete equations using cards numbered 1-9 with each card having a mathematical symbol. You can navigate everything with the stylus – easy enough.
Unfortunately, playing the games is not as easy at first. To start, the instructions on how to play are scant. For me, Hidden Logic was a bit more fun, but once you get the knack for it, it doesn’t take long to zoom through the 100 variations of puzzles. Completing equations in Formulate is time-consuming and just not that much fun since you are at the mercy of the cards that you are dealt. I would have loved to have seen a variety of math games – some that don’t revolve around cards. Even timed multiplication and division games or other simple challenges might have been good additions.
One highlight of the game is that you can play up to four computer or human opponents with DS Wireless Communications. And while the graphics aren’t complex, they don’t need to be so they work for this game. Kids might like the choice of cute avatars, too.
For the price, I’d rather buy another game, but Challenge Me: Math Workout definitely tests your math skills so it may be the perfect choice for some casual gamers.
