CID The Dummy. Crash test this game.
“CID The Dummy” is just that, kind of dumb. This 3D-rendered, side scrolling platformer has gamers playing as a crash test dummy. Crash test dummy? You mean those guys who get plowed into brick walls for marketing gimmicks? It seems as though they’ve run out of cute animals to base game characters on when crash test dummies are pulled into the scene.
CID starts off complaining about how he’s bored with being a “Crash Dummy” and wants to do more with his life. An inane storyline begins with characters that are as unappealing as CID delivering some dialog and the plot begins! The professor’s daughter has gone missing and CID (surprise!) is the man…err, dummy for the job.
Aside from its initial shortcomings, “CID The Dummy” is actually a very good looking game that jumps off the PSP screen with vibrant colors and motion. The animated cinematics are well rendered and creative even if they fall short because, in the end, who really wants to play as a crash test dummy? Production value is reasonably high for a modern side-scroller and the backgrounds are fairly standard fare for a “fantasy industrial” setting. There are lot of things blinking and flashing, lots of yellow and black emergency-style striping and metal factory grating. Who doesn’t love metal factory grating?
CID runs and jumps, attacks with punches and a bazooka and is able to sneak and flip in the air. The gameplay itself wouldn’t be so bad if the game were just somewhat interesting. Halfway through the very first level, I was bored with the stereotypical “find this button, open that door, move that lever” style gameplay. CID has to find the generator to activate a crane and while on that mission, I encountered rotating saw blades that looked dangerous enough to shred a crash test dummy. Sadly, CID withstood the blades for one or two hits and I continued on my quest.
The game is full of moving platforms, enemies to battle, elevators and every side-scrolling trick in the book but lacks anything to really grab the player’s interest. Fans of the classic side-scrollers like “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Revenge of Shinobi” will most likely balk at this title, but those looking for a playable game with some nice production value and decent gameplay-on-the-go may get a few bangs for the buck with CID. He won’t cost you much and travels nicely in your PSP. Games can be saved and picked up later, perfect for a flight or bus ride.
As an action game character, CID the dummy is not terribly likeable and that sets the stage for a game that falls victim to an oversaturated market full of mediocre side-scrollers. CID does little to stand out from the pack and is best played when found for a bargain before your next trip. You may play it once but I doubt you’ll be back for more. Rated E 10+ and best for younger kids.
