The Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) series is now available on your iPhone and/or iPod Touch with Dance Dance Revolution Shake (DDR S). Personally, I have never been a fan of the series when it was first released and gained such widespread popularity. My high school had a DDR fan club where the sole purpose was to play DDR for a half hour or so. It may have qualified as an athletic club too. You won’t get any of the same kind of exercise with DDR S, but that is to be expected with the mobile version of the series.

Now I don’t have any preconceived biases towards the game, rather a lot of my lack of excitement stems from the plain and simple fact that I cannot dance. And that even seems to carry over to the realm of video games.

As most of you are probably aware, the game play for any DDR game involves timing your movements with the directional arrows that appear on the screen. Normally the player has a dance mat or pad, which they use to dance along with the music, coordinating their actions with the arrows in the game. But all you have here is the touch screen of your iPhone and/or iPod Touch that works in a very similar manner, except you utilize your finger(s) instead.

This can be particularly difficult to play as you are matching your fingers with the arrows instead of your feet; experienced DDR players may find this especially challenging. But once you get over this obstacle, the game can be quite enjoyable. I myself did not receive too much enjoyment from it but then again I am not a fan of the entire series. It just isn’t my cup of tea.

While I am lukewarm regarding the rest of the game, I do have tons of praise for how the game was transported over to the iPhone/iPod Touch format. Many games that are transferred over to mobile gaming feel like they are mere shells of the original. Not in this case though. This game includes many of the features found in the console and arcade versions. This includes a vast array of musical selections and some colorful characters, too. If I didn’t know any better, I would swear I was playing the real game. The graphics aren’t up to the same standards, obviously, but that is to be expected in the handheld version. Overall, fans of the DDR series of games will definitely find enjoyment in this chapter of the gaming franchise that is accessible right in the palms of their hands.
