Text Review

Growing up there are always those genres that just seem to appeal to young boys. Pirates, cowboys and army soldiers were always things that you imagined yourself being with your friends as you used your imagination and a handful of cheap household items to help expand your universe beyond your backyard. One of the most popular that my friends and I always wanted to be though was ninja. Whether it was influences from things like Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, or Batman cartoons, ninja was always a fan favorite whenever the boys got together on a summer day.

Playing up on that boyhood love is the game Ninja Reflex. Ninja Reflex allows you to get the boys together again in a brand new setting and pretend you are of the ninja ilk. Unfortunately, your boyhood imagination probably had more creativity and depth to it than this game.

Compared to other mini-game driven titles on the Wii, Ninja Reflex is a series of mini-games set up by your “sensei” in order to hone your skills and reflexes so that you may don the traditional black ninja garments with a black belt of the highest degree. From throwing ninja stars to grabbing insects with chopsticks, the games are designed to push your reflexes with the Wiimote and nunchuck as you try to increase your score and improve upon your completion time in order to move up the martial arts ranks.

A solid party game, the completely mini-game based experience lacks any sort of salvageable single player mode as you will tire of the games by yourself in no more than a couple of hours. And even with other people, the depth to this game is lacking since there are only a handful of mini-games that are meant to hone your reflexes.

Although simple in terms of plot and gameplay, the game at least has okay graphics and music you would expect to find in a martial arts dojo. It doesn’t really bolster the experience, but it doesn’t detract from it either.

The strongest point about Ninja Reflex is the responsiveness to the Wiimote. You will not falter during a mini-game due to the lack of control of your chopsticks or katana blade. This could also be though because the controls are very simple, and there aren’t many complicated movements beyond a flick of your wrist for your throwing stars or a horizontal slash for your blade.

In terms of replay value, the mini-games get repetitive quickly and so I can’t see you playing this very long by yourself or even with friends. At best, I see this game being a rental on a rainy day if you have a few friends over, or for as a last minute party game, and should not be lumped into the same category as the great mini-game driven games out there. It is surprising to see someone like EA attach their logo to such a subpar game like Ninja Reflex and for those of us out there who bought it, maybe EA should reflexively give us our money back.
