Space Bikers. In space, nobody can hear you bike.
A space ship carrying space bikers is hit by an asteroid causing them to crash into Earth! Lucky for them it wasn’t Mercury or they would have been incinerated by the sun or choked by noxious gases.
In Earth-suburbia the space bikers must find household objects laying around a nearby domicile. Nobody notices a crash-landed space ship in the back yard. Sounds silly, and it is. Space Bikers is a quirky, little, pick up and play platformer-style action game where you drive these pint sized bikers around environments straight out of a Tom and Jerry cartoon. Think “Honey I shrunk the Kids” mixed with Excitebike.
Button controls for iPod Touch and iPhone aren’t bad, although they take some time to get used to. There are accelerometer controls as well. Accelerate, break, switch direction and pop a wheelie to get over taller objects. Climb ramps, jump things and try not to land on your head. It’s a cute game that should find a happy audience with casual gamers and kids looking for a hybrid platformer-motocross video game. There is a storyline mode with four bikers. Each biker has a different ride with different handling characteristics. Space Bikers also has minigames and an unlockable quick race mode.
The sound effects and animations are sufficiently goofy and the entire game has a silly cartoon feel about it. The bikers bend and compress like spring loaded rag dolls and seem to enjoy themselves while being impaled on wood beams and crushed under their ATV. The irritating country music that plays in the background can easily be turned off and the pleasing sounds of not listening to country music can be heard.
While I don’t find it to be the most exciting game on iTunes, Space Bikers appears to be well made feels like a descent platformer-racer. It is an excellent game to keep your kids occupied on a road trip.
