Text Review

The Siege of Spinner Cay is the second chapter in Telltale Games' five-part episodic adventure series, Tales of Monkey Island. First off, you should know that the story continues right where the last episode ended. So even if you get a small recap of the previous episode at the beginning of the game, I suggest you check out episode 1 first if you don't want to miss the beginning of the story (it is a fun game as well).

In this episode Guybrush arrives at Spinner Cay, a city inhabited by merpeople. Here he finds Elaine who is trying to stop a gang of pirates infected with the “Pox of LeChuck” from attacking the city. To do this Guybrush must first collect four summoning artifacts needed to find “la Esponja Grande,” the only item that has the power to stop the pox.

Like the previous episode, this is a traditional point and click adventure game where you move around in different areas to collect items, talk to people and solve puzzles. The puzzles in this game are a bit easier than the ones found in old school point and click adventures, but I do think they have improved since the last episode.

Another thing that has improved since the last episode is the characters. While still not on par with the characters from the older games in the series, the new characters in this game have been given a bit more personality. The humor is also a step up from the last episode and you will definitely get a few good laughs, but it feels like there are a few too many references to the old games that don't have any real purpose other than to please the fans. Also there are still a couple of instances where you are given multiple dialog choices and the characters say the same thing no matter what you choose.

Graphically the game naturally looks about the same as the last episode since it uses the same graphics engine, but Spinner Cay looks a bit more interesting than the generic pirate town from episode 1. The sound design is also about the same as last time, which is not a bad thing. Both the music and voice acting are excellent.

This is another solid 2-3 hour game that should appeal to anyone who likes point and click adventures. Hopefully the final three episodes will contain even more improvements while keeping the entertaining style of the series intact.
