Who doesn’t enjoy a nice drive in an armored vehicle? Wait, I guess most people wouldn’t understand but those of you out there who have experienced the thrill of riding in a mass of man-made metal know what I mean. Tankz gives you the ability to drive through a futuristic setting and blow up enemy tanks and fortifications; definitely a recipe for success (in my honest opinion). However there are some substantial flaws in this game that detract from the overall enjoyment.
To begin the game, you select from 4 different tanks, each with their specialties. Your choice of tanks consists of the Striker, Leopard, X10 Assault and Scorpion. The user is also able to choose the level, mode of play, and difficulty level. The levels include your typical selections, an ice level, desert level and so forth. You can choose whether or not you want to compete against your best time or your highest score. In the beat the clock mode, you race to collect flags hidden throughout the level in the quickest time possible while dodging enemies that litter each level. To better your high score, simply kill as many enemies and collect as many flags as possible before you run out of lives. The difficulty levels vary from easy to hard to just plain crazy. I’ll admit I have not tried the crazy difficulty level yet but may give it a try. Hopefully my self-esteem can handle it.
Now I am sure from all of the above mentioned facts you can’t fathom how I would not like this game, right? Well there are some flaws in its game play that I can not ignore. First off, in order to move the tank, you must use a directional pad on the lower left-hand portion of the screen, which does not always seem to track your movements correctly. This pad only takes you forward, backward, strafing right and left. It does not include turning. In order to turn, the player must tilt their iPod Touch/iPhone. Now for me it is kind of tough to hit enemy tanks when I am tilting the screen, throwing my aim off considerably. I found myself more worried about the controls than I was about the game itself, which, for me, is never a good thing.
Outside of this, the game is rather enjoyable. The graphics are crisp and the music is quite well done. The overall artistic design is nice as well. It combines contemporary and futuristic elements, which is nice to see. The game as a whole is enjoyable if you can figure out the controls at some level, but I never could.
