Tattoo Mania, for the iPod Touch/iPhone, gives you a glimpse into the world of a tattoo artist. Being a tattoo artist is not a high stress occupation, right? Well, after playing Tattoo Mania, you may have a completely different view of it, or maybe not because, after all, it’s just a game. You play as a tattoo artist who is out to do the best tattoos on the maximum number of customers that he/she can, collecting cash along the way. But beware losing a customer because you will have to get your resume ready. Ouch - talk about a rough line of work!

All kidding aside, Tattoo Mania is an extremely enjoyable game. It definitely falls into the casual gaming category; there is no real strategy or action but just good old-fashioned fun. Using your finger on the touch screen, you must fill in the specific tattoo that is outlined on the person’s body. The tattoos include tribal designs, skulls, eagles, and tattoos for Mom. Be careful as you fill the template so that you don’t cause the customer too much pain as they will eventually reach their threshold and then it is GAME OVER. Don’t take too long either - if you aren’t quick enough, customers waiting will become dissatisfied and leave your tattoo parlor and that equals GAME OVER also. The challenge? If you hastily apply the tattoo, you lose the customer, but if you don’t do it in a timely manner then you will lose potential customers. You have the option of swapping customers in and out but this can prove to be difficult when the number of customers increases. As the game moves along, the pain tolerance and patience of your customers seems to diminish.

The layout and design of the game is very well done. There is a vibrant array of colors involved. The backgrounds are accented exceptionally; it really gives the game a good vibe. There is a harder edge given to the game by the hard rock and/or metal music that plays in the background, but it does fit into the whole world of tattoo parlors. The screen is very easy to read and follow as you are playing. There are not too many wasted motions - the game is simple and certainly gives you the impression that the developers believed that less is more.

Overall, Tattoo Mania is a nice way to kill some time. It is simple but can be challenging at points, which makes the game even that much more enjoyable and addicting. The game’s difficulty can increase a little bit faster than I would like to see but that is really nitpicking at this point.
